Music
Music plays a major part in the life of the Prep School and all children are involved in musical activities and lessons. In addition to a weekly music lesson and participation in one of our three Prep School Choirs (Under 9, 11 and 13), there are numerous concerts, plays and performances every term, as a glance at our School Calender will show.
These start with our informal after-school ‘Tea and Cake’ Concerts, which are held two or three times a term and the focus of which is on creating a relaxed environment for our young performers. They culminate in more formal events such as the School Concert and the beautiful annual service of Nine Lessons and Carols which we sing at Long Melford Church.
In between comes all manner of other performing opportunities – we sing annually for the blind in Haverhill, we contribute our voices to thousands of others in the Young Voices Concert at the O2 and we take part in the Barnardo’s Concert at the Barbican. We sing and perform in many classes at the Sudbury Festival and there is a flourishing School Orchestra and various other instrumental groups (strings, winds, recorders, even handbells). Last, but not least, we put on our own ambitious end-of-year production in which music always plays a major part.
Behind all this, Barnardiston has a very busy Music Department with class lessons covering a broad and inclusive curriculum and peripatetic lessons taking place throughout the week. We have a good record of getting children to achieve higher grades and thus obtaining scholarships to their next school.
At Barnardiston, we aim to produce children who are both passionate and knowledgeable about music and who are confident, flexible and expressive performers – and the uniquely Barnardiston combination of energetic bustle and quiet, careful individual tuition achieves that goal.
